The bells of San Isidro…
A stone’s throw from Chichen Itza, Francisco de Montejo in the 16th century declared San Isidro Labrador the patron saint of the local hacienda. The tiny church bursts at it seams every May 15 when the Mayan community holds a grand fiesta here in the saint’s honor. The locals celebrate their spiritual traditions with a mix of ancient Maya Cosmovision and Catholic dogma. In the early morning the little chapel is empty, but the surrounding grounds are alive with birdsong.
