a wind that blows from

I never stay in American chain hotels in Mexico, but enroute home once I stopped for an overnight at a Holiday Inn in Silao near the colorful city of Guanajuato.  So, in a way, this poem goes with the pic.

“It was night for many miles, and then the real stars in the purple sky,

like little boats rowed out too far,

begin to disappear.

And there, in the distance, not the promised land,

but a Holiday Inn,

with bougainvillea growing through the chain link by the pool.”

~ Richard Siken, “The Dislocated Room”

“I am going to carry my bed into New York City tonight

complete with dangling sheets and ripped blankets…

I want to be as close as possible to my pillow

in case a dream or a fantasy should pass by.”

~ Gerald Stern, “96 Vandam”

“full of wind and sun, breath feeds poetry from art’s aqualungs,

under a blue sea that is sky, language threads itself through air

a mystery, syncopating music, rising from breath of the young…”

~ Quincy Troupe, “Song”

cotton candy torches, sweet as furtive kisses,

shared on benches beneath summer shadows.”
