On my morning walk I saw this…

A thing of beauty can sometimes survive — even thrive — in the harshest environment.  What could be worse than trying to squeeze up through a crack in the concrete to find the sun?

Summers in DC are usually hot and humid.  The grass dies, the plants wilt, and it’s impossible to work on my back porch in late July and early August.  But this year the grass is green and the plants are happy.  They’ve actually gotten waterlogged a few times from so much rain.  There have only been a few days when the temps got so high I had to stay inside.  Still, on the worst days, it’s not nearly as bad around here as it is lots of other places on the planet.

Check out these 25 harshest environments where people survive — and quite possibly thrive.

  1. Sometimes I feel just like that sidewalk flower. 🙂

  2. I think of “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” by Betty Smith.

    • Yes! Very good example, seapunk2, and a wonderful book.
