Easter: San Miguel de Allende

In the past we’ve had the good fortune to celebrate Easter week in Latin America (Ecuador and Costa Rica).   Semana Santa, or Holy Week, celebrations south of the border are sometimes elaborate; they can also be very simple.  They’re extremely reverential, on the one hand, but also encourage lots of fun and fireworks.

From the serious…

To the not-so-serious…

Blowing up the Judases is done in good fun with lots of noise and color.  The figures can be politicians, cartoon heroes, characters from fairy tales, or your great-uncle Jose.   (An interesting tradition that some may or may not agree with.)

Check out You Tube for similar celebrations in Guatemala, Ecuador, El Salvador, and other Latin American countries.  Also see previous post —  Easter Celebrations: Holy Week in Latin America
