Happy Squirrel Appreciation Day!

Fuzzy the Squirrel

Today is both Squirrel Appreciation Day and National Hugging Day.   Why not celebrate both — hug a squirrel!   Sound a little…nutty?

I happen to like squirrels, as well as just about all other critters, but they are sometimes a nuisance.   They steal most of the seeds from the birdfeeders and manage to dump the rest on the ground.  They dig little holes all over the place, burying peanuts in the yard and the herb garden and the planters.  Then they dig more little holes all over the place trying to find the nuts they’ve buried.  They have loosened the plastic sides of one feeder and chewed through most of the wood.  The first “squirrel-proof” feeder I bought lasted a full year before they totally destroyed it.  I have a second feeder now that’s supposed to be squirrel proof and, so far, it’s working dandy.  But that may be because I give them peanuts every morning and they’re too stuffed to bother with it.

Still, I like the squirrels.  Fuzzy, my favorite, has been around a couple of years.  I can separate him from the others because he has a small dot — a mole? — beneath his left eye.  And, if he’s in earshot when the front door or the garage door opens, he comes running.  He likes peanuts and dried corn.

When I was growing up my dad fed dried corn to the pigs.  He seemed to enjoy those quiet moments alone, shelling corn kernels off the cob as the pigs waited eagerly.  I thought about my dad the other morning when the thermometer fell to the teens and the wind was fierce and I was standing outside beneath the maple tree shelling corn for the squirrels.   All those years my dad was fattening up the pigs so we could have country ham and bacon for breakfast.  But why on earth was I standing in the freezing cold feeding a bunch of squirrels?  I suppose I just like to see critters (both the four-legged and two-legged variety) enjoy a good meal.
