New York City: Quick and Crazy Weekend

I changed hats again a few days ago and became tour guide for the week when relatives arrived from Kentucky.  We started off at a fast clip and never slowed down!

We walked the red carpet at FAO Schwarz, ducked in and out of the airconditioned shops on 5th Avenue, and hefted backpacks for 17 blocks between our hotel and Penn Station.

I enjoyed talking food with the cabbies…compared notes about favorite tagines and couscous and levels of heat in a good harissa with Ahmed the Moroccan.  Lamont from Brooklyn knew where to find the vendors with the best — and cheapest — hotdogs.  At 6:45 on Friday morning the kids were discussing McDonalds’ cinnamon melts and I was talking with Masood from Egypt about falafel.   We had dinner at midnight at TGI Friday’s in Times Square and discovered a great little place for breakfast — Angela’s Rock and Roll Deli at 6th Avenue and 58th Street near Central Park South.  Huge servings, friendly staff, and cheap prices for big, thick pancakes, sausage, and scrambled eggs.

A quick walk in the park…

One view from the Empire State Building…

We saw Phantom of the Opera, but missed Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus…

…liked the huge ferris wheel inside Toys R Us…

…and got funny hats to wear on the Vamoose bus back to DC!
